Through the Deep Waters by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Seventeen year old Dinah Hubley was raised in a brothel by her prostitute mother.  She dreams of becoming a Harvey Girl out west. After making a life-altering decision, she escapes from Chicago and heads west to pursue her dreams.  When she gets to Kansas, she finds out she is too young to be a Harvey Girl, but without any other options she accepts a job as a chambermaid at the Clifton Hotel.

After making friends with her roommate Ruthie, the local preacher’s daughter, Dinah begins to realize you cannot run from your past or poor decisions without the help of God’s forgiveness.  When Amos Ackerman, a local chicken farmer, begins showing interest in Dinah she begins to withdraw from her friends.  Who would want a woman like her with a hidden past?

Slowly, Dinah begins to learn about Christ’s love for her – no matter her past – and begins to fall in love with Amos despite his handicap.

Then, the “gentleman” from Chicago shows up.

From the only friend in Chicago, to an unlikely supporter in hotel management, to her new best friend and new love, Dinah realizes that God truly does forgive all and everyone deserves a second chance.

This is definitely a must-read book.  I have read several of Kim’s books and I keep thinking they can’t get any better… and then she blows me away again.

The only thing I disliked about the book – without spoiling the ending – is how it ended.  I would have liked an epilogue or something sharing a little more of what happens in the future.  But, maybe this is slated for a second book.
