Monday Listicles: 10 Things I Wanted To Be When I Grew Up

It’s Monday again.  The weekend flew by, par for the course.  The best part of Monday’s is Monday’s Listicles… so, sit back and enjoy and then check out the other lists through the link below.

This week’s topic is 10 Things I Wanted To Be When I Grew Up.  The topic comes from Wendy over at Twisted Domestic Goddess. I can honestly say, being an accountant was never in my list of things I wanted to be.  Not even close.

  1. Race Car Driver– more specifically, a professional drag racer.  (No surprise there, right?)
  2. Librarian– I love to read, so I thought this would be an ideal job for me.  I always say if I was rich and didn’t have to work, I’d be a librarian for fun.  I thought it would be cool to read the books and be able to share them with others.
  3. Teacher– I was actually a preschool teacher for awhile, and I am three classes away from my early childhood education degree.  But, being a teacher doesn’t pay the bills… as sad as that is.  We entrust our future to these men and women in thankless jobs and they get paid peanuts.
  4. Engineer– I wanted to be an engineer that helped designed cars.  I wanted to go to MIT and work at one of the “Big 3” car manufacturers.  Too bad I suck at math… yes, and I am an accountant now.  Go figure.
  5. Writer/Author– I wanted to write.  Especially children’s books.  I thought that would be a fun and interesting job.
  6. Lawyer– I don’t know why really, I guess I just thought it would be fun.
  7. Princess– Isn’t that every little girl’s dream?
  8. Chef– I wanted to be a famous chef in some fancy restaurant or resort.  I wanted to live up to my namesake (Julia Child.)
  9. Commercial creator for movies– I thought that would be the coolest job ever.  You’d get to sit around all day watching movies and picking out the best scenes and lines to use in a commercial.  Ask Nana how many times I’ve said, “OH!  They should have done such and such in that commercial, it would have been so much better!”
  10. Interior Designer– This was one of those odd-ball things I wanted to be.  I don’t know why, for sure.  I just thought it would be cool to be able to spend other people’s money to decorate their homes.

As I am sitting here at the dining room table, I am kinda laughing to myself.  This was the list of things I wanted to be when I grew up.  I am none of these officially, but some of these I am.  (Did that confuse you?)

My father gave me the opportunity to be a drag racer at a young age.  I was a teacher.  I write a blog and have written articles for other websites.  I cook and create dishes for my family and then share my recipes on here.   I have done some graphic design and commercial art at a previous job, as well as designing my scrapbook pages and cards.  I am given the opportunity to review books for others whenever I choose.  I have free rein in decorating my house to create a home for my family.

I am a mother.  A wife.  An accountant.  A blogger. A scrapbooker.  A card maker.

Still not a princess… but I can dream.

Life is good.

  2. I agree with your statement on teachers! What an undervalued profession. Great list!

  3. It made me laugh how you followed up “professional drag racer” with “librarian”. Although I completely agree – both would be fun in different ways.

    You know what would be so fun? Being the person who picks music for movie scenes. If I’d known that was an actual job, my life might have taken a different path.

  4. I am cracking up at the number of people who wanted to be librarians. I wanted to work in a book store, with new, awesome smelling books, untouched by germy hands.
    So true about the teacher pay. If my husband ever lost his job and I had to bring the bacon home, we’d be in a world of hurt. No bacon for sure. (Oh wait. We raise pigs. We’d have bacon, but not milk.)
    Isn’t it wonderful the way we can use our talents and dabble in activities without making them full-time careers. Makes them more fun, I think.

  9. I hear you on the teacher thing. Teacher pay is one of my pet peeves especially when it comes to early childhood ed. ECE is so, so key. And so, so stressful. How people justify paying preschool teachers peanuts completely escapes me.
