Easy Patty Melt

Grab your lemon-lime phosphates, Cats… we are sharing a retro favorite today – patty melts!  These ooey, gooey burgers are amazingly delicious and so easy to make!  You can even sing along to Frankie Avalon while wearing your poodle skirt as you make them!  

Back in the day, in my parent’s hometown, there was a corner diner that we used to go to. It was the quintessential diner – stools, bar, cook in a white apron and hat, soda fountain… Grandpa and I would go in almost every day – either for breakfast or lunch. This is where I was introduced to my first patty melt – by a woman named Patty! I was probably 6-7 and for years, thought she named it! Hopefully, this version does her proud!

This recipe is so simple, with just a few ingredients – crank up the juke box and enjoy.

  • Ground beef
  • Onion
  • Rye bread
  • Swiss cheese
  • American cheese

How to Make Easy Patty Melts

Form patties with the ground beef. While patties are frying in skillet, toast the bread and sauté the onions in butter. Build the patty melt by layer one slice of toast, one slice American cheese, burger patty, onions, swiss cheese, and mustard. Top with remaining piece of toast.

Variations

  • Turkey. Not a fan of ground beef? Try these delicious sandwiches with ground turkey instead.
  • Change up the condiments.  You can use mustard, ketchup, mayo or any other condiment you choose.

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces lean ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons salt divided
  • 4 teaspoons black pepper divided
  • 6 Tablespoons butter divided
  • 1 medium sweet onion sliced and separated
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 dill pickle spears
  • 2 Tablespoons mustard

Instructions

  • Form ground beef into 4 patties, approximately 1/2 inch thick. Set aside.
  • Melt 4 Tablespoons butter in large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add onions. Season with 1 teaspoon salt and 2 teaspoons black pepper. Saute until brown, approximately 8-10 minutes.
  • Remove onions from pan and set aside.
  • In same pan used to cook onions, place hamburger patties. Season with remaining salt and pepper. Cook until browned on one side, approximately 5-6 minutes. Flip and cook second side an additional 4-5 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  • Reduce heat to medium. Spread 1/4 teaspoon of butter on one side of all the slices of bread. On opposite sides, spread mustard, evenly. Lay four slices of bread in pan, butter side down.
  • Top each slice of bread with one slice cheese, burger patty and a 1/4 of the onion mixture.
  • Add second slice of cheese to sandwich, then top with second slice of bread, butter side up.
  • Grill the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  • Cut on a diagonal and serve with a pickle spear.
