Grandma’s Easy Apple Dumplings

One of my favorite recipes I have from my grandma is apple dumplings. She used to keep all her recipes in red notebooks. I don’t know what happened to these when my grandpa died, hopefully, they didn’t get thrown away. It is funny – I do not remember grandma ever making these delicious dumplings, but I do remember my grandpa making them several times. He used the recipe in a red notebook, so she must have made them at one time.

These missing notebooks are one of the reasons I scour antique stores and online auctions looking for handwritten recipes. I love knowing that someone painstakingly copied down or created a recipe, and filed it away to be used. It irks me when families just throw these treasures away or sell them on eBay. I collect these bits of history and family lore – even though they are not my family. I even use the recipes to cook for my family. Each one tells a story of someone who loved to cook for their family, and I hope their legacy continues through me.

Grandma’s apple dumpling recipe is easy and so delicious. Especially served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream – perfect on a cold winter evening by the fireplace.
